Ever since humankind can remember, monsters have been feared creatures who are disliked for their abilities. They killed humans, babies, livestock, etc. and wreaked havoc upon human villages. So, humanity took a counter-strike. They built huge walls, posted guards, and captured and killed monsters. Research of them was banned, and any who took specimens or tried to research the Monsters were thrown out into the woods to face their imminent deaths.
All kinds of creatures roam the woods. Demons, vampires, werewolves, faeries, skinwalkers, ghosts, harpies, anything the mind can imagine. Sometimes they can integrate themselves into human society, and hide among the people, but they are quickly discovered and hung. Monster hunters are hired to exterminate any who try to stay in the human villages.
Many monsters have lost their minds long ago, and now roam the forests as Lost Souls. Others may have gone corrupt with power, and were pushed back by the others into the Deep Woods, a dark place riddled with volcanoes which is essentially impossible to inhabit.
Although, some of them are kind, peaceful creatures.
The medieval human villages are all linked together within the walls by messengers who run back and forth between villages, making deliveries and running news. In the center of all these villages, a city is ruled over by twin sisters. They are humble, peaceful women, who want the best for their people. They both despise monsters, and look to further their kingdom.
Guards live in stations in each village, doing patrols along the walls, and making sure no spots are damaged where people could get out. They are equipped with the latest weaponry available, shooting at any monsters that come too close to the walls. Nothing gets in or out, unless by the leaders' or council's orders.
